Our goal should be to live life in spiritual amazement…get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal, everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed. –Abraham Joshua Heschel
How I look at the world is my choice. Of course, if I’ve had a bad day I’m more inclined to be bummed and if I’ve had a great day I’m more inclined to be cheerful, but how I live and how I see the world goes beyond the day’s events. In such an angry and divisive time, I find myself asking how I can possible live with spiritual amazement. While I don’t think it’s healthy to deny your experience, I also think we can consciously choose to see every aspect of our existence as “phenomenal” and “incredible”. We can really be with our experience—with all its painful and beautiful and confusing elements—and let it motivate us to be better people, to have more compassion, more understanding, and definitely more love. Yes, more love—I think we could all use a lot more of that right now.
